Regain Couples Therapy Review

We surveyed real couples who used Regain, and a HelpGuide staff member personally tested its services with a partner. Here’s what we learned about the couples therapy platform.

Our overall experience with Regain therapy

Regain is an online therapy app that focuses on couples counseling. It’s owned by BetterHelp, one of the largest therapy platforms available. Regain is available in all 50 U.S. states. The platform doesn’t accept insurance. Users pay $70 to $100 per week, billed monthly, for a subscription.

To review Regain, one of our staff members and her partner signed up for a month of marriage therapy sessions and conducted hands-on testing. They engaged with the couples therapist, took note of platform usability, and tried out its messaging features. In addition to hands-on testing, our team also surveyed 100 couples who have used the platform. This gave us plenty of insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the couples therapy app.

Our testers and the surveyed users all had positive experiences with Regain. The couples therapists were skilled, the interface was easy to navigate, and the platform had very few technical issues. Most of the users—our testers included—also believed Regain was a good value, despite not accepting insurance. Our testers said they simply wished the sessions were longer.

Overall, 89 percent of surveyed users said they were satisfied with their online couples therapy experience on Regain.

How we tested Regain couples counseling services

A HelpGuide staff member and her partner signed up for a month of Regain’s couple therapy sessions. They went through the intake process, were matched with a therapist, and attended three sessions. They kept weekly journals of their sessions and wrote about the quality of their therapist and the sessions. Throughout the process, they also took notes on the overall usability of the platform, paying close attention to Regain’s scheduling and billing practices, extra features, customer support, and security.

Before we began hands-on testing, the HelpGuide team spent hours researching Regain and other therapy apps, assessing factors like platform security, cost, and provider availability. Our team also surveyed 100 couples who used Regain, so we could collect feedback on their experiences with the service.

Sign-up and using the platform

Our testers completed the intake questionnaire in less than 10 minutes. Despite the quick process, Regain was also thorough in collecting information for therapist-matching purposes. Our testers were able to specify therapist preferences such as gender and area of speciality, such as addiction, ADHD, etc. They were automatically matched with a therapist and scheduled an appointment within one to three days.

93 percent of respondents said that the sign-up process was easy or very easy, and 82 percent felt confident or very confident that their personal information was being protected during sign-up. As was the case with our testers, 69 percent of users had scheduled an appointment within three days.

Usability

Testers had no problems navigating the platform or using the scheduling features. They found the direct messaging feature to be especially useful and intuitive. Regain allows for unlimited messaging between users and their therapists through the platform’s chat, making it possible to ask follow-up questions and conduct check-ins between sessions. One tester noted, “The ability to message the therapist outside of scheduled appointments made a big difference for us.”

Surveyed users agreed that Regain was easy to use when it came to scheduling, messaging, and attending sessions. The platform was also very stable. 92 percent of users said they didn’t experience any technical issues during their sessions.

Customer support

When our testers reached out to customer support via a help form, they received a personalized response on the same day. Other users received similarly speedy support. 23 percent of survey respondents reached out to customer support. Of those, 62 percent received a response within 24 hours. 92 percent said their issue was resolved. All of this shows that Regain has prioritized creating a quick and effective customer support team.

Our couple’s session experience

Our testers were very satisfied with the first therapist they were matched with—so much so that they didn’t go through the process of switching. They praised the therapist as being direct, insightful, compassionate, and effective in making them both feel heard. “I appreciated how they made space for both of us to speak and never felt like they were playing referee.”

The testers described the video sessions as highly structured, with the therapist using an emotionally focused therapy approach. Their sessions involved identifying patterns of miscommunication, de-escalating conflict, and using empathy-driven responses. The therapist also provided them with extra resources and encouraged them to practice communication exercises between sessions.

The biggest downside for our testers was that the sessions were too short. “I wish the sessions were longer. Thirty minutes often felt too rushed, especially when we were getting into more emotional or complex topics. Just when we’d start to make real progress, the session would end.” Even so, they reported that the sessions improved their relationship.

Survey respondents were also generally happy with their providers. 92 percent of couples said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their therapist.

Therapists used a variety of approaches, including emotionally focused, CBT, and the Gottman Method. Some of these approaches involve assigning couples exercises to try out with each other between sessions—as was the case with our testers. However, only 78 percent of couples said their therapist always or often assigned exercises or activities between sessions. So, if the idea of “homework” doesn’t appeal to you, you can likely find a therapist who doesn’t assign it.

Although our testers didn’t go through the process and switching therapists, 19 percent of surveyed users did. 78 percent of them reported that the process was easy or very easy.

Users also generally felt comfortable trusting the app to maintain their privacy during therapy sessions. 88 percent said the platform felt secure or very secure as they communicated with their therapist.

Pricing options and value

On its site, Regain says its pricing ranges from $70 to $100 per week, based on factors like location and therapist availability. Regain doesn’t accept insurance. However, its pricing model is similar to the out-of-pocket costs of its online therapy competitors ($60 to $200+). It also tends to be less than the out-of-pocket costs of in-person therapy ($100 to $200+).

Our testers were billed a monthly subscription price of $400 (quoted at $100 per week). They thought this was a good value for the service they received. 77 percent of survey respondents agreed.

Perhaps what adds to the value of the service are the app’s extra features. A subscription with Regain also gives you and your partner access to expert-led classes. The classes cover specific topics such as trauma and substance abuse. The classes involve other users, but everyone shows up as anonymous to protect your privacy.

Regain also does an excellent job at communicating how much its services cost. Only 5 percent of surveyed users reported experiencing unexpected charges. Our testers reported that the cancellation policy is clear and easy to find. You can cancel your subscription at any time to avoid being charged in the next billing cycle.

Regain highlights

Our testers and surveyed users found that Regain had many strengths. Here are a few of the advantages of using the platform for couples therapy.

Quick onboarding. As mentioned earlier, many users, including our testers, found the onboarding easy. Additionally, 90 percent of users were satisfied or very satisfied with the first therapist they were matched with. This indicates that the platform’s therapist-matching algorithm is effective. That said, no matching tool is perfect, so you might still need to try out several providers before finding the best one for you.

Clear and fair prices. Receiving a surprisingly high bill can add stress to what would otherwise be a satisfying online therapy experience. Fortunately, Regain is clear about its prices. 92 percent of surveyed users said the billing and pricing information was clear and transparent.

Ease of use. If you’re new to online therapy or simply feel unconfident with technology, the thought of relying on telehealth can be intimidating. Our survey respondents and hands-on testers agree that Regain offers an intuitive platform, making it a suitable choice for couples new to online therapy. The service makes it easy to book appointments, join video sessions, and message providers. Our testers, as well as 92 percent of surveyed users, said their experience was free of technical issues.

Where Regain could improve

Regain has generally strong ratings in areas ranging from customer support and usability to therapist quality and billing. Still, there are a few areas where it can further improve its already impressive service.

Session length. Our testers were disappointed by how short their therapy sessions were. They both reported that 30 minutes wasn’t long enough. This is especially true for couples therapy, because both partners want to leave each session feeling as if they had time to fully express themselves and feel heard. Longer sessions might help a couple better navigate relationship problems and resolve issues in a marriage.

Boost outcome score. 70 percent of survey respondents said their relationships improved as a result of Regain’s therapy services. An additional 19 percent said that their relationships “somewhat” improved. Despite high therapist satisfaction rates, the number of couples who reported improvement in their relationship could be higher. Including even more couples-specific tools or resources within the app might help improve this score.

Is Regain right for me and my partner?

Regain made our list of best online marriage counseling and couples therapy platforms. It’s an excellent option for first-time couples seeking an easy entry into therapy platforms. Regain also has a wide selection of providers, increasing the odds that you and your partner find a therapist you both are satisfied with.

However, if you want to use insurance, consider a different option. For instance, platforms like Talkspace and Thriveworks accept insurance. Additionally, if 30-minute sessions seem too short, consider trying out a competing service.
